Certifying a trainer to Level D standard (FAA/JAA/CAA etc.) is no easy task. ASTi has created a set of pre-requisites for ASTi's Level D certified aural cue and communications systems training course.

Pre-requisites for the training course include familiarization with the following documents:

We believe that it will only be possible to accomplish the training objectives if the intended students meet certain standards of experience.

For proficiency Level 3 the pre-requisites are:

• Four year college degree in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Acoustics or equivalent industrial experience.
• A minimum proficiency in mathematics to become familiar with the concepts of decibel calculations, and Fourier series/frequency spectrum energy plots.
• A minimum of four years working in flight simulation
• Ability to read electrical wiring diagrams, system architecture schematics and similar
• Familiarity with simple acoustical principles, and phenomena (diffraction, standing wave theory, etc.)

The course includes hands-on experience with models and at the conclusion of the course each participant will be assessed and given a proficiency certification as follows:

Level 1: Attended - Completed the course proficiency not assessed.

Level 2: Basic Knowledge - Demonstrated the ability to make basic changes to an existing aural cue model, add sound recordings, tune cues within the scope of an existing model structure.

Level 3: Intermediate Knowledge - Demonstrated the ability to modify a legacy aural cue model create new model segments, tune to SME comments.

Level 4: Expert - Demonstrated the ability to analyze aircraft data, create a blank-sheet aural cue model, construct an ICD, conduct Level D tuning and obtain Level D certification. (This level requires a minimum of ASTi's 2 week Developers course plus a minimum of 40 hours technical support for an actual certification. Alternatively, this can be regarded as an ACE conversion course for an engineer with prior experience of Level D certification tuning and certification.)

To obtain maximum benefit from the course we would strongly recommend that the customer plan to have the designated students participate in the site-survey with ASTi. Unless the specific individuals are allocated to this program from the ground-up, it is unlikely that they will understand all the issues that can and will affect end-result, come the day of acceptance/certification testing.

The training certification may also apply to engineers working on simulators targeting both non-formal Level D equivalent performance, and devices designed for certification to lower performance levels (for example Level B/C).
